If you are developing a website meant for selling products or services, it becomes essential for you to seriously consider SEO friendly design. Google is considered to be the ‘windows’ to the Internet world, and good rankings with Google would certainly help in your efforts with your business.

In designing a SEO friendly website there are some aspects you should be looking into -

  1. To create your Meta Title you should preferably have 100% prominence of your keywords. If not this should be at least 75% (more on this later).
  2. To make your keywords effective, try to use keywords in your image ALT text.
  3. Use the keywords you want to rank for throughout the page.
  4. The more important pages you have in your website should be contained in the top two levels.
  5. Look for important website directories where you can submit your website.

Here are some quick tips on how to get your website great search rankings:

Meta Title – For the Meta Title Tag you should try to have your keywords at 100% prominence. This basically means have the keyword as close to the start of the tag as possible.
For example, if we were optimising for the keyword “web designers” then two title tags could be -

  1. Blackstone Publishing – Web Designers at affordable prices: This tag has 60% prominence.
  2. Web Designers at affordable prices – Blackstone Publishing: This tag has 100% prominence.

Image ALT tag – Using your keywords on related images on your page may also provide you with good result. If an image is used with a hyperlink then search engines will use the ALT text as the anchor text.
Some examples of the above tips are -

  • An ALT attribute might be img src=”images/logo.gif” alt=” Web Designers ” width=”350″ height =”800″. You can use the ALT txt to describe the graphic.
  • Content in your webpage should generally be at least 100 words and use the keyword several times.
  • The top 2 directory levels are generally regarded as the most important. Most search engines only index a site to a depth of 2 levels (clicks to page), however, Google has been known to index up to 4 levels from the start page.
  • For some of your off-page optimization you may want to use the DMOZ and Yahoo directories. DMOZ and Yahoo directories have a link value associated with them. Often these two directories will only allow you to use the name of your site as an anchor text, and it is advisable that you use a keyword-rich domain name to get the advantage.

Conclusion
A lot of website designers use SEO as a quick way to get targeted traffic. However, always ensure when designing your website that it should always consider the human visitors and you should always create your contents with human visitors in mind. Just think, what does Google mainly want? Google’s goal is to make the user experience the best it can, therefore, if you do the same you should do fine.
